Lake Effect Basketball

About Lake Effect Basketball
Lake Effect is sports organization (Basketball, Softball and Baseball) established in 2018. The main motto behind it’s existence is: A POSITIVE FORCE OF TEAM CHEMISTRY, FAMILY AND FUN. This 7th grade basketball team was organized given there were two fantastic West Michigan Coaches willing to lead a group of girls, and many families wanting to enjoy the game of basketball beyond just the school season (but not as schedule-heavy, expensive, and complex as joining a larger basketball organization)

Our Mission
THE POSITIVE FORCE COMES FROM THE ENERGY SOMEONE EMBODIES, ON AND OFF THE FIELD. THIS ENERGY SHINES FROM HEAD TO TOE: MENTALLY, PHYSICALLY AND MORALLY. BEING PART OF LAKE EFFECT ATHLETICS MEANS YOU ARE PART OF SOMETHING BIGGER THAN YOURSELF - A COMMUNITY, A FAMILY AND A TEAM. FROM COACHES AND PLAYERS, TO FAMILY AND FANS, LAKE EFFECT ATHLETICS WILL NOT WAIVER FROM BEING A POSITIVE FORCE OF SPORTSMANSHIP AND FELLOWSHIP TOWARDS OPPONENTS, COACHES, OFFICIALS AND OUR OWN TEAM.

Meet the Coaches

James Brown Jr.

A devoted husband and father of 7 children, Coach James is dedicated to youth development, while allowing their voices to be heard. Born and raised in Grand Rapids, MI and a graduate of Grand Rapids Central High school (class of 2000), where he played basketball all four years. He is entering his 3rd season of coaching girls travel basketball, with prior coaching experience with girls school basketball at the 7/8 grade level. Deeply rooted in faith & service, he also serves as one of 7 Deacons at Grace for the Nations Church in Cascade, MI. He is a small business owner/entrepreneur, and a very good bowler.

Jake Maher

Since 2019, Jake has coached elementary and middle school girls’ basketball with a focus on skill development, confidence, and basketball IQ. He believes players should learn how to think and make decisions on the court, not just follow set plays. Most importantly, he wants every player to enjoy the game and grow as an athlete. “We compete to win, but success is measured by improvement, effort, and a willingness to learn”.
